A good foundation is always the basis of success

If you are going to have an implant, the dentist will make an assessment of your bone in which the implant is to be inserted. In some cases, there will be grounds for bone formation to be stimulated.

An implant must be able to withstand the same chewing pressure as your other teeth, and therefore there are demands on the bone mass and bone structure.

When you lose a tooth, the bone will shrink in the area where the tooth sat. This happens quite naturally, when the bone is no longer functional and it is called resorption.

Studies show that the bone, one year after extraction of the tooth, will be reduced by around 50%. Of course, this is often too weak a foundation to have as a starting point.

Fortunately, today we have the opportunity to build up the missing bone and the opportunity to limit the bone breakdown during extraction.

Closed sinus lift

If it is in the upper jaw that you need an implant to replace one or more of the molars, our challenge is to find the maxillary sinuses (sinus maxillaris) just above these. If the dentist assesses that the need for bone building is limited to achieve a sufficient foundation, a closed sinus lift is performed.

A closed sinus lift is performed during the same session as the implant placement. The hole for the implant fixture is made a little deeper so that the dentist gets as close to the sinus, without perforating, as possible. The sinus floor is then lifted up with an osteotome and the bone building material is placed. The fixture is inserted and closed.

Open sinus lift

If the need for bone building is greater, an open sinus lift is performed.

This procedure is shown in the images above. Here, a small field is opened through the gums and the bone building material is pushed under the sinus cavity. As a rule, there is enough solid bone for the implant fixture to be inserted at the same time. but in a few cases we have to wait for bone formation before we can insert the fixture. Thus, the treatment will take place in 2 sessions.

Bone block

If it is in the front region you need an implant and the bone ridge is reduced too much for us to achieve the aesthetic result ss needed, we can perform a block operation. What happens is that a block is harvested from another area of the oral cavity. the block is fixed with a pair of surgical screws and healing is awaited for 4-6 months. and then it is possible to insert the fixture.

Talk to us at the clinic if this would be the solution for you.
